Prof. İsmail Cinel, MD

Prof. İsmail Cinel, MD is a specialist in anesthesiology with a subspecialty in intensive care. He works in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation units of Acibadem Bodrum Hospital in Muğla and Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. With more than 34 years in medicine, his areas of expertise are intensive care treatment, advanced life support and palliative care.

Dr. Cinel graduated from Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed his specialization at the Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation in 1998. From 1998 to 2005 he worked at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine / Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation. Between 2005 and 2008 he held the position of adjunct associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Division of Critical Care Medicine, where he also completed training in 2005. In 2009 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, and from 2009 to 2022 he worked at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine / Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation. He obtained the Medical Specialization Board qualification in Intensive Care in 2013 and returned to Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2022. He is a member of the Thoracic Cardiovascular Anesthesia and Intensive Care Association, the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, the Turkish Intensive Care Association, the Clinical Enteral Parenteral Nutrition Association, the Türk Farmakoloji Association and ESPEN – The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism.

Clinical focus

Dr. Cinel’s clinical work centers on the care of critically ill patients in the intensive care setting. Intensive care treatment involves the close monitoring and organ-supporting management of patients whose condition is unstable or life-threatening, and advanced life support refers to the structured measures used to sustain vital functions during acute deterioration. In this context, he works with the Anesthesiology & Reanimation team on the ongoing assessment, treatment planning and follow-up of patients who require this level of care.

His areas of expertise also include palliative care, which focuses on relieving symptoms and supporting patients and families when a serious illness is advanced. Each case is evaluated on an individual basis, and the approach is discussed with the patient and relatives as appropriate. His membership in nutrition-related societies reflects an interest in clinical nutrition and metabolism as part of the care of seriously ill patients.

How Dr. Cinel works with international patients

Dr. Cinel consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. For patients who cannot travel at first, a video consultation with Dr. Cinel can be arranged so that existing reports can be reviewed and the situation discussed before any visit is planned.
