M. Mümtaz Özarar, MD is a radiologist at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the hospital’s Radiology unit. Dr. Özarar graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and completed his radiology training at PTT Sanatoryumu Hospital in 1994. In his current role he supports diagnostic assessment through imaging and coordinates with the relevant clinical teams when further evaluation or follow-up is considered necessary.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Özarar’s practice is the imaging of breast diseases. This includes mammography, an X-ray-based examination of the breast that is commonly used both in screening and in the assessment of specific findings, and ultrasonographic imaging, which uses sound waves rather than radiation and is often applied to characterize findings seen on mammography or felt on clinical examination. The choice between these methods, or their combination, depends on the patient’s age, breast density, symptoms and prior imaging history.

Dr. Özarar also works with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the context of breast disease, MRI may be considered when additional information is needed beyond mammography and ultrasound, for example in selected diagnostic situations or in the follow-up of previously identified findings. Because each imaging method has its own strengths and limitations, the aim is to select the examination that answers the clinical question with the least burden for the patient. Imaging findings are interpreted together with the patient’s history and, where available, earlier examinations, and the results are communicated to the treating physicians so that any next steps can be decided within the wider clinical team.

How Dr. Özarar works with international patients

Dr. Özarar speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who prefer another language. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit itself. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of which imaging examinations, if any, may be appropriate. Video consultation is available for international patients who would like an initial imaging-focused review of their situation before deciding whether to travel; whether an in-person examination is needed depends on the individual case and the type of imaging under consideration.
