Mehmet Ercan, MD

Mehmet Ercan, MD is a radiologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Radiology unit. Clinical focus

Dr. Ercan’s clinical work covers three main imaging modalities. Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce real-time images of soft tissues and organs and does not involve ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed cross-sectional images, and is frequently requested when soft-tissue detail is needed. Tomography produces layered cross-sectional images of the body and is used in many diagnostic pathways. In each case, the radiologist’s role is to perform or supervise the examination, interpret the resulting images and report the findings to the referring physician, who then discusses their significance with the patient.

For international patients, imaging examinations of this kind are often part of a broader diagnostic pathway. Dr. Ercan’s evaluation is imaging-focused: he reviews the clinical question raised by the referring team, assesses whether the available images are adequate, and reports his findings so that they can be considered alongside the patient’s history, examination and laboratory results. Where earlier imaging exists, comparison with previous studies may form part of this assessment. The choice of modality depends on the clinical question, the region being examined and the patient’s individual circumstances, and is decided together with the treating physicians.

How Dr. Ercan works with international patients

Dr. Ercan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination where appropriate and a discussion of the options, including which imaging examinations, if any, may be advisable. Video consultation is available for international patients, which can be useful for an initial discussion of existing imaging or for follow-up after an examination has been completed and reported. Any recommendations arising from imaging are made in coordination with the patient’s referring or treating physicians.
