Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Sürmeli, MD

Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Sürmeli, MD is an otorhinolaryngology specialist in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. With more than 23 years in medicine, his clinical work concentrates on ear and hearing disorders, ear surgery, voice complaints, vertigo and balance disorders, and tongue and tongue base cancer. He sees adult international patients for assessment and treatment planning in these areas.

Dr. Sürmeli graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2003. Between 2004 and 2009 he trained as a medical specialty student at the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital ENT Clinic, completing his specialty in Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases at Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital in 2009. He then worked as an ENT Specialist at Karaman State Hospital (2009–2012) and at Health Sciences University, Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital, ENT Clinic (2012–2015), where he became ENT Chief Assistant in 2015. In 2019 he served as ENT Chief Assistant at Marmara University, İstanbul Pendik Training and Research Hospital, and from 2020 to 2021 he was ENT Associate Professor at Health Sciences University, Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital, ENT Clinic. In 2021 he practiced at Özel MEDİENT KBB Medical Center as an associate professor, and in 2023 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on topics including dysphonia and anxiety in fibromyalgia syndrome, vocal fatigue in teachers, the impact of allergic rhinitis on voice in children, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and the video head impulse test in multiple sclerosis, and vertiginous epilepsy.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Sürmeli’s practice relates to the ear and hearing. He evaluates and manages hearing loss, including candidacy assessment for cochlear implants, and performs middle ear surgery, cholesteatoma surgery and inner ear surgery. He also assesses patients with vertigo, balance disorders and Ménière’s disease, conditions in which a careful history and vestibular testing are typically needed to distinguish between the possible causes before any treatment is proposed.

In the field of voice and head and neck disease, Dr. Sürmeli evaluates hoarseness, a symptom that can arise from a range of benign and less common causes and usually requires laryngeal examination to clarify. He also has expertise in tongue and tongue base cancer, where treatment planning depends on the extent of disease and is discussed on an individual basis after review of the available findings.

How Dr. Sürmeli works with international patients

Dr. Sürmeli consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
