Prof. Mehmet Ufuk Abacıoğlu, MD

Prof. Mehmet Ufuk Abacıoğlu, MD is a radiation oncologist who practices in the Radiation Oncology units of Acibadem Altunizade Hospital and Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 33 years in medicine. He graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1993 and completed his specialty training in Radiation Oncology (Radyasyon Onkolojisi) at the same faculty in 1997. He speaks Turkish and English.

Between 1993 and 1997, Dr. Abacıoğlu worked in the Department of Radiation Oncology at İstanbul Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. From 1998 to 2011 he served as Professor of Radiation Oncology in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, and in 2010 he also held a position as professor of radiation oncology at Neolife Medical Center. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2017. His professional roles include Board member and General Secretary of the Turkish Radiation Oncology Association (2009–2010) and Board member (2011–2012), Chair of the Turkish Oncology Group TOG-Central Nervous System Study Group (2007–2010), Executive Board member of the European Association of Neurooncology (EANO) (2010–2014), and Board member and Vice President (2013–2015) and President (2015) of the Neurooncology Association. He is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Radiation Oncology Group, the Rare Cancer Network and the Türk Akciğer Kanseri Association (TAKD), and he received honorary membership of the Romanian Urology Association in June 2015.

Clinical focus

Dr. Abacıoğlu’s clinical work centers on radiotherapy for cancer. His areas of expertise include brain tumors, head and neck cancers, breast cancer and gastrointestinal oncology. In addition to external beam radiotherapy, he works with brachytherapy, in which a radiation source is placed close to or within the treated tissue.

His published work reflects a particular interest in neuro-oncology. Topics include a dosimetric analysis of radiation-induced hypothyroidism in patients who received radiotherapy to the neck, a treatment planning comparison of RapidArc radiosurgery and GammaKnife for benign brain lesions, whole brain reirradiation in patients with multiple brain metastases, prophylactic cranial irradiation in stage III non-small cell lung cancer, concurrent chemoradiotherapy in muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and health-related quality of life during postoperative chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer. He has also published interviews with investigators of clinical trials in glioblastoma, primary central nervous system lymphoma and glioma for the Eur Assoc Neurooncol Mag.

How Dr. Abacıoğlu works with international patients

Dr. Abacıoğlu consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, including whether and how radiotherapy may fit into the overall treatment plan. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling.
