Melekşah Pekel, MD is an anesthesiology specialist at Acibadem Kent Hospital (Izmir) in İzmir, where she works within the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit. Dr. Pekel’s areas of expertise are anesthesiology, reanimation and perioperative anesthesia care. Anesthesiology involves planning and delivering anesthesia so that surgical and other procedures can be carried out with the patient’s condition and comfort in mind. The anesthesiologist’s role usually begins before the operation, with an assessment of the patient’s general health, existing medical conditions, current medications and any previous experience with anesthesia. This information is used to select an anesthetic approach that is appropriate for the individual patient and the planned procedure.

During surgery, the anesthesiologist is responsible for administering the anesthetic and monitoring the patient’s vital functions, including breathing and circulation, and for responding to changes as they arise. Perioperative anesthesia care also extends into the recovery period, when the patient wakes from anesthesia and pain control and general condition are followed. Reanimation refers to the support and stabilization of patients whose vital functions are compromised, whether in relation to surgery or other critical situations. In all of these areas, Dr. Pekel works as part of the wider treatment team, with attention to the patient’s individual treatment plan and perioperative needs.

How Dr. Pekel works with international patients

Dr. Pekel speaks Turkish and English. For patients traveling from abroad, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. For patients who are scheduled for surgery, a first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, including the anesthetic considerations relevant to the planned procedure. Interpreters can be arranged when needed. Video consultation is available for international patients and may be used to discuss a patient’s medical background and anesthesia-related questions before travel.
