Prof. Meriç Şengöz, MD

Prof. Meriç Şengöz, MD is a radiation oncologist at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Radiation Oncology unit. With more than 51 years in medicine, his practice centers on radiotherapy for cancer, including breast cancer, head and neck cancers, brain tumors and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as brachytherapy. He speaks Turkish and English.

Dr. Şengöz studied medicine at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine from 1975 to 1982 and completed his specialty training in radiation oncology at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1991. From 1991 to 1996 he worked at the Turkish Cancer Foundation Oncology Center, and from 1996 to 2005 at the Marmara University Faculty of Medicine Radyasyon Onkolojisi Department, where he became an Associate Professor in 2004. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2005. He is a member of the Turkish Medical Association, the Türk Radyasyon Onkolojisi Association, the Turkish Oncology Group, the European Society for Theurapetic Radiation Oncology (ESTRO), the American Society for Theurapetic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Radyoterapi Grubu.

Clinical focus

Dr. Şengöz plans and delivers radiotherapy as part of cancer treatment. His areas of expertise include breast cancer, head and neck cancers, brain tumors and gastrointestinal oncology. He also performs brachytherapy, a form of radiotherapy in which the radiation source is placed close to or inside the area being treated; whether it is suitable depends on the type and location of the tumor and is decided case by case. Radiotherapy may be considered on its own or alongside surgery or chemotherapy, and the appropriate approach is determined after review of the diagnosis, imaging and previous treatment.

His published work reflects these interests. He has co-authored studies on cisplatin-based concomitant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, adjuvant radiotherapy combined with uracil-tegafur and leucovorin for locally advanced rectal cancer, concurrent chemoradiotherapy with low-dose weekly gemcitabine in stage III non-small cell lung cancer, and a multicenter Rare Cancer Network study of outcomes in solitary plasmacytoma. He has also contributed to publications on gamma-knife surgery for meningiomas involving the superior sagittal sinus, radiosurgery for intracanalicular vestibular schwannoma, and dosimetric measurements for the Leksell gamma knife.

How Dr. Şengöz works with international patients

Dr. Şengöz consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the radiotherapy options, including brachytherapy where it may be appropriate.
