Merve Hayretci, MD

Merve Hayretci, MD is a radiologist at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where she works within the Radiology unit. Her practice is centered on imaging-based assessment, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in support of the evaluation and diagnosis of a broad range of medical conditions. She has more than 25 years in medicine and is a member of the Turkish Radiology Association, the Türk Magnetik Rezonans Association and the Turkish Medical Association.

Dr. Hayretci graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2001. Between 2003 and 2004 she served at Çorum Seydimköyü Health Center. She completed her radiology training at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital in 2009 and then worked at Ardahan Devlet Hospital from 2009 to 2010. In 2011 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. Her scientific work includes co-authored presentations at national and European congresses on topics such as ultrasound diagnosis in blunt thoracic trauma, a case of neurofibromatosis, giant pontine capillary telangiectasia associated with venous angioma, inferior turbinate bullosa, herniation of a giant bladder diverticulum through an incision scar, transorbital intracranial penetrating injuries and giant multinodular goiter with retropharyngeal extension.

Clinical focus

Dr. Hayretci’s clinical focus is diagnostic radiology, with particular involvement in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In hospital-based radiology, the radiologist’s role is to select and interpret imaging examinations in cooperation with the referring physician, so that findings can be placed in the context of the patient’s history, symptoms and previous investigations. MRI is one of several imaging methods used to assess soft tissues, organs and other structures, and the choice of examination depends on the clinical question being asked. Radiology reports are intended to support, rather than replace, the assessment made by the treating clinical team.

The wider field of radiology includes examinations such as coronary CT angiography and PET-CT imaging. Whether any particular imaging study is appropriate for an individual patient is a decision made by the treating physicians on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the clinical indication and any prior imaging that has already been performed.

How Dr. Hayretci works with international patients

Dr. Hayretci communicates in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination where relevant, and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be a practical way to review existing imaging and discuss whether further examinations are needed before travel. Any imaging findings are interpreted cautiously and communicated to the referring physician so that they can be considered alongside the patient’s overall clinical picture.
