Prof. Metin Çakmakçı, MD

Prof. Metin Çakmakçı, MD is a general surgeon at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the General Surgery unit. Dr. Çakmakçı completed his secondary education at İstanbul Erkek High School in 1974. He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1981 and completed his General Surgery training at the same faculty in 1986. From 1989 to 2000 he worked at the Hacettepe University Department of General Surgery. He then joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, where he practiced from 2000 to 2007, before moving to Anadolu Health Center, where he remained from 2007 to 2023. He returned to Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023.

Dr. Çakmakçı’s surgical practice covers breast diseases, including breast cysts, breast screening, and breast cancer. He performs thyroid surgery as part of his endocrine surgery work, and he treats inguinal hernia. In oncological surgery and digestive system surgery, his areas of expertise include pancreatic diseases, liver diseases, and bile duct diseases. Robotic surgery is one of the approaches used in his practice. Each patient’s suitability for a particular operation, including a robotic approach, is assessed individually on the basis of the clinical findings and imaging.

His published work reflects both his surgical interests and a long-standing involvement in infection control and health care quality. Publications on which he is an author include studies on gamma probe-assisted sentinel lymph node evaluation in breast cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, HER2/neu gene amplification in breast carcinoma, pancreatic cancer and glucose metabolism, surgical site infections as a health care quality issue, antibiotic stewardship programs and the surgeon’s role, hand hygiene compliance, and the long-term prevention of central-line associated bloodstream infections.

How Dr. Çakmakçı works with international patients

Dr. Çakmakçı consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes, and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the options.
