Prof. Müfit Kalelioğlu, MD

Prof. Müfit Kalelioğlu, MD is a neurosurgeon at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital and Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul. He practises within the Neurosurgery unit, with subspecialty interests in Spinal Health and the Treatment of Pituitary Diseases. He has more than 52 years of experience in medicine and has been with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2004.

Dr. Kalelioğlu graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1974 and completed his specialty training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine between 1976 and 1981, in the Department of Neurosurgery. From 1981 to 1991 he worked in the Karadeniz Teknik Ünüversitesi Faculty of Medicine Nöroşirürji Department, where he was appointed Associate Professor in 1988. Between 1991 and 2002 he worked at the Göztepe Training and Research Hospital Neurosurgery Clinic, and from 2002 to 2004 at the Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine Nöroşirürji Department, where he became Professor in 2002. He is a member of the Türk Nöroşirürji Association, the Nervous System Surgery Association, the Turkish Medical Association and the İstanbul Medical Chamber. His publications include work on spinal meningiomas, intracranial chondroma, pontocerebellar corner epidermoids, Chiari malformation type III and cerebral alveolar echinococcosis, as well as a chapter on pineal region tumors in Basic Neurosurgery Book I, a Turkish Neurosurgical Society Publication.

Clinical focus

Dr. Kalelioğlu’s clinical work covers both cranial and spinal neurosurgery. In the spine, his areas of expertise include spine health in general and back, neck and spinal disc disorders. In the brain, he evaluates and treats brain tumours, including gliomas and meningioma, together with pituitary disorders, brain aneurysm, brain haemorrhage and arachnoid cyst.

His areas of expertise also include hydrocephalus, neuroblastoma and hemiplegia. Each case is assessed individually on the basis of the patient’s history, neurological findings and imaging, and treatment options are discussed with the patient after this review. Whether a surgical or a non-surgical approach is appropriate depends on the individual condition and cannot be determined before a clinical evaluation.

How Dr. Kalelioğlu works with international patients

Dr. Kalelioğlu speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI and CT reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before deciding whether to travel; any decision about treatment is made after a full review of the medical records and, where necessary, an in-person examination.
