Müge Koçak, MD

Müge Koçak, MD is a neurologist at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Neurology unit. Dr. Koçak graduated from Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine in 2003. From 2004 to 2005 she trained in chest diseases at Heybeliada- Süreyyapaşa Training and Research Hospital, and in 2011 she completed her neurology training at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine. In 2011 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, and from 2011 to 2012 she worked in the Neurology Clinic of S.B. Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital in Erzurum. From 2012 to 2013 she practised at Central Kent Hospital in Bayraklı, İzmir. She has co-authored publications on subjects including body image perception in multiple sclerosis patients, intraoperative neuromonitoring of motor-evoked potentials in infants undergoing spine and spinal cord surgery, nonmotor symptom development in essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease, magnetization transfer imaging in clinically isolated syndrome, a case of brachial plexus schwannoma, and paraneoplastic pandysautonomia in non-small cell lung cancer.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Koçak’s practice concerns pain conditions of neurological origin. She evaluates and manages headache, including migraine, as well as trigeminal neuralgia and pelvic pain. She also assesses patients with peripheral neuropathy and works with clinical neurophysiology in the investigation of nerve and muscle disorders. Her expertise extends to neuromuscular diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dr. Koçak also cares for patients with movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease, and for patients with cognitive decline, including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Her work in this area addresses neurological changes associated with aging, with assessment and care planning adapted to each patient’s history, symptoms and existing findings.

How Dr. Koçak works with international patients

Dr. Koçak consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI or CT reports, laboratory results, previous electrophysiological studies and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical neurological examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling or to follow up after a visit.
