Prof. Dr. Nigar Baykan

Prof. Dr. Nigar Baykan is an anesthesiologist in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul. Her clinical work covers anesthesia care, with particular training in neuroanesthesiology, neurosurgical anesthesia and critical care. She has more than 49 years in medicine and has been with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2004.

Dr. Baykan graduated from Bursa Kız High School in 1977 and from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1983. She completed her specialization in Anesthesiology and Reanimation at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1990. Between 1991 and 1992 she undertook a fellowship in the Department of Neuroanesthesiology at The University of Sheffield School of Medicine in England, followed in 1994 by a fellowship in the Department of Neuroanesthesiology at The University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA. From 1993 to 1998 she worked at M.Ü. Haydarpaşa Vocational School of Health, where she served as Head of the Department of Anesthesiology.

Clinical focus

Dr. Baykan’s practice centers on anesthesia care for patients undergoing surgery, with a particular focus on neuroanesthesiology and neurosurgical anesthesia. Her published work includes a report on the anesthetic management of a pregnant patient during an emergent craniotomy for a brain tumor combined with a cesarean section in the same session, a paper in the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology on anesthesia for supratentorial tumor surgery, and a study on the effect of local anesthesia on pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Beyond the operating room, her areas of expertise include critical care and enteral and parenteral nutrition, that is, nutritional support delivered through the digestive tract or intravenously for patients who cannot eat normally. She is also involved in the field of carotid and vertebral artery transluminal angioplasty. Dr. Baykan is a member of the Turkish Anesthesiology and Reanimation Association, the Society of Neursurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care, the Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Association and the Carotid and Vertebral Artery Transluminal Angioplasty Study.

How Dr. Baykan works with international patients

Dr. Baykan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options; for patients scheduled for surgery, this includes a pre-procedure anesthetic assessment. Video consultation is available for international patients.
