Prof. Önder Us, MD

Prof. Önder Us, MD is a neurologist at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Neurology unit. His subspecialty areas are headache treatment; stroke and preventive treatments; and dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and aging. He has spent more than 54 years in medicine and consults in Turkish and English.

Dr. Us graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1978 and completed his neurology specialty training and doctorate at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurology, in 1983. He became an associate professor at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and a professor there in 1994, and in 2011 he obtained Medical Specialty Board certification in Clinical Neurophysiology. At Marmara University Faculty of Medicine he served as a board member from 1995 to 1998, as a member of the Faculty Board and Faculty Administrative Board from 2004 to 2007, as chair of the Department of Internal Medical Sciences from 2005 to 2007, and as chair of the Department of Neurology from 2001 to 2011. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2005. He is a member of the World Federation of Neurology, the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology, the Turkish Neurology Association, the Clinical Neurophysiology EEG -EMG Association and the Epilepsiyle Savaş Association. His co-authored publications include studies on motor nerve impairment in diabetic polyneuropathy, F wave parameters in S1 radiculopathy, visual evoked potential abnormalities in migraine, the origin of primary restless legs syndrome, the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy, gait parameters in Parkinson’s disease and asymmetric lobar degenerations.

Clinical focus

Dr. Us assesses and manages headache disorders, including trigeminal neuralgia, and performs nerve blocks where they are considered appropriate for an individual patient. He also works with patients who require stroke prevention and preventive treatments after a cerebrovascular event. In the field of neurodegenerative and age-related conditions, his practice covers dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

His neuromuscular and neuroimmunological work includes myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscle and nerve diseases, and peripheral neuropathy with neuropathic pain. His certification in clinical neurophysiology relates to the electrodiagnostic evaluation that is often part of assessing nerve and muscle disorders. Any treatment plan depends on the findings of the individual assessment and is discussed with the patient.

How Dr. Us works with international patients

Dr. Us consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before deciding whether to travel; whether it is suitable depends on the clinical question and the documents available.
