Assoc. Prof. Özden Sıla Ulus Buturak, MD

Assoc. Prof. Özden Sıla Ulus Buturak, MD is a radiologist in the Radiology unit of Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. She has more than 25 years in medicine, and her clinical interests center on breast diseases and diagnostic imaging methods, including mammography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound imaging.

Dr. Buturak graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2001 and completed her radiology training at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2007. She then worked at Ardahan Devlet Hospital from 2007 to 2009 before joining Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2009. From 2010 to 2018 she was at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Faculty of Medicine and SHMYO, and from 2018 to 2022 she practised at Ataşehir Florence Nightingale Hospital. She received the title of Associate Professor in 2020. She is a member of the European Radiology Association, the Turkish Medical Association and the Turkish Radiology Association. Her co-authored publications include work on preoperative breast MRI, a self-compression technique in mammography, fetal magnetic resonance imaging, neuroimaging in multiple sclerosis and glioma, vessel wall imaging, and radiation dose in computed tomography coronary angiography.

Clinical focus

Dr. Buturak’s clinical work is focused on breast diseases and the imaging methods used to evaluate them. Mammography is a central part of this work, and she has published on a self-compression technique intended to improve the patient experience during the examination. Magnetic resonance imaging is used in selected situations, for example when further characterization of a finding is needed or when additional information is required before treatment planning; her publications include contributions to a multicenter study on preoperative breast MRI.

Ultrasound imaging is also within her area of expertise and is often used alongside mammography or MRI to assess breast findings. In each case, the choice of imaging method depends on the clinical question, the patient’s history and any previous examinations, and the radiologist’s report is intended to support the referring physician in deciding on further steps. Beyond breast imaging, her published work reflects experience with magnetic resonance imaging in a range of settings, including neuroradiology and fetal imaging.

How Dr. Buturak works with international patients

Dr. Buturak consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The hospital’s international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as mammography, MRI, CT or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit.
