Prof. Özlem Er, MD

Prof. Özlem Er, MD is a medical oncologist in the Medical Oncology Department at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. She cares for adults with a range of solid tumors, including head and neck cancers, lung and other thoracic cancers, kidney and adrenal gland cancers, brain tumors, anal cancer, and melanoma and other skin tumors. She has more than 32 years of experience in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2018.

Dr. Er graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. She completed her specialization in Internal Medicine at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital between 1994 and 1999, followed by specialization in Medical Oncology at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, completed in 2002. She was appointed Associate Professor in 2003 and became a Professor at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine in 2010. From 2002 to 2009 she was a faculty member in the Division of Medical Oncology at Erciyes University, where she also chaired the Department of Medical Oncology from 2005 to 2007. Her international experience includes a period as a clinical observer in breast cancer clinical research at MD Anderson Cancer Center (2003–2004) and as a research fellow in breast cancer research at Thomas Jefferson University (2006–2008). She is a member of ASCO, ESMO, the Turkish Oncology Group, the Medical Oncology Association, and the Turkish Cancer Research and Control Institution Association. Her published work covers topics such as chemotherapy in metastatic gastric cancer, low-molecular-weight heparin in small cell lung cancer, the management of cancer-associated venous thrombosis, and the clinical course of breast cancer patients with metastases limited to the liver.

Clinical focus

Dr. Er’s clinical work centers on the medical oncology management of solid tumors. Within head and neck cancers, her areas of expertise include oral cancer, tongue and base-of-tongue cancer, and intranasal tumors. She also sees patients with brain tumors and with lung and other thoracic cancers.

Her expertise further extends to kidney cancer, adrenal gland cancer, and anal cancer, as well as malignant melanoma and other skin tumors. As a medical oncologist, she assesses systemic treatment options as part of a patient’s overall care. Whether and how a given treatment is appropriate depends on the individual diagnosis, stage, and general health, and is decided after a review of each patient’s records and findings.

How Dr. Er works with international patients

Dr. Er consults in Turkish and English. The international patient team coordinates the transfer of medical reports, pathology results, and imaging ahead of a visit and arranges appointments. A first consultation typically covers a review of the medical history and existing test results, a discussion of the diagnosis, and an outline of the treatment options that may be considered; further tests may be requested where needed. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling or as part of follow-up.
