Prof. Dr. Sefa Müezzinoğlu

Prof. Dr. Sefa Müezzinoğlu is a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology at Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His practice covers orthopedics and traumatology, foot and ankle surgery and pediatric orthopedics, and he has more than 44 years in medicine.

Dr. Müezzinoğlu graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982. After a period of compulsory service in Iğdır and Kars and military service as a Medical Second Lieutenant, he completed his residency at the Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology between 1985 and 1990. From 1990 to 1991 he was a Clinical Fellow and Postdoctoral Fellow in orthopedics at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, and in 1995 he was a Research Fellow at the AO Research Institute Davos. His academic career began at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology (1991–1995). He then moved to Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, where he was Associate Professor from 1995 to 2005 and Professor from 2005 to 2017. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2008.

Clinical focus

Dr. Müezzinoğlu’s clinical work spans general orthopedics and traumatology together with several subspecialty areas. He treats disorders of the foot and ankle and provides pediatric orthopedic care for children with musculoskeletal conditions. A further part of his practice is orthopedic sports medicine, including the assessment and treatment of sports injuries, arthroscopy and knee surgery. He also performs joint arthroplasty and hip joint-preserving surgery, and he has an interest in cartilage research.

His professional memberships reflect these areas. He is a member of TUSYAD Turkish Sports Injuries Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Association, the Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Association, the Hip Joint Preservation Surgery Association, TOTBİD Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association and TTB Turkish Medical Association. Internationally, he belongs to EFORT European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, ISAKOS International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and ICRS International Cartilage Research Society, and he is an affiliated member of AAOS American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

How Dr. Müezzinoğlu works with international patients

Dr. Müezzinoğlu consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options, which may or may not include surgery. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling, although a final assessment usually depends on an in-person examination and up-to-date imaging.
