Prof. Dr. Serap Semiz

Prof. Dr. Serap Semiz is a pediatric endocrinologist who sees patients in the Pediatrics unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul. Her subspecialty is growth and adolescence, and she has more than 41 years of experience in medicine. She graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1985 and then worked as a physician during her compulsory service at Edirne Gazimihal Health Center (1985–1987) and Antalya Health Center No. 1 (1987–1989). She completed her training in Pediatrics at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine in 1994 and her training in Pediatric Endocrinology at the same faculty in 1998.

Dr. Semiz worked at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics from 1989 to 1995 and at the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology there from 1995 to 1998, followed by a post at Akdeniz University / Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 to 2010 she worked at Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics – Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, where she became an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in 2003 and a Professor of Pediatrics in 2008. She joined her current hospital group in 2010 and has been affiliated with Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Faculty of Medicine since 2013. She is a member of the Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Association, the Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Association and the Ege Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Association, and she serves on the International Growth Database (KIGS) Turkey Scientific Committee. Her published research includes work on pubertal development in Turkish children, metabolic risk factors in childhood obesity, thyroid volume and iodine status in an endemic goiter area, and summer camps for children with diabetes.

Clinical focus

Dr. Semiz evaluates and manages hormonal and developmental conditions in children and adolescents. A central part of her practice is growth and puberty, including growth failure and short stature, growth and puberty disorders, and early puberty. She also cares for children with childhood diabetes, providing diagnosis and ongoing management in cooperation with the family.

Her other areas of expertise include pediatric thyroid disorders, pediatric adrenal disorders, osteogenesis imperfecta and differences of sex development. Because many of these conditions develop over time, assessment typically relies on a careful history, growth records, clinical examination and laboratory or imaging findings, with treatment decisions made individually for each child.

How Dr. Semiz works with international patients

Dr. Semiz speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who need them. The hospital’s international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as laboratory results, X-ray, ultrasound or MRI reports, growth charts and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing test results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss a case before or instead of traveling.
