Prof. Dr. Sevgi Bilgen

Prof. Dr. Sevgi Bilgen is an anesthesiologist at Acibadem Kozyatagi Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit and the Vitro Fertilization and Reproductive Medicine Center. Her clinical work covers pediatric anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, regional anesthesia, intensive care, and anesthesia for IVF and reproductive medicine. She has more than 36 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Bilgen graduated from Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1990 and completed her specialization in Anesthesiology and Reanimation at the same faculty in 2002. From 2002 to 2007 she worked as a specialist in Anesthesiology and Reanimation at Yalova SSK and State Hospital. Between 2007 and 2018 she served in the Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation. In 2014–2015 she also completed a non-thesis, distance-education master’s degree at İstanbul Arel University / Institute of Social Sciences Department of Healthcare Institutions Management. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2018. She is a member of the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation (TARD), including its Pediatric Anesthesiology and Reanimation Committee and Obstetric Anesthesia Committee, as well as the Turkish Intensive Care Society, the Regional Anesthesia Society, and the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA).

Clinical focus

In pediatric anesthesia, Dr. Bilgen’s published work addresses topics such as determining the size of the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway in children, caudal anesthesia for neonatal circumcision, and the prevention of emergence agitation in children after sevoflurane anaesthesia. In obstetric anesthesia, her research includes postoperative pain management following cesarean delivery, including wound infiltration with tramadol and the use of ketamine before general anaesthesia. She has also published on the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, propofol injection pain, and lower urinary tract discomfort after transurethral resection of the prostate.

Her further areas of practice are regional anesthesia, intensive care, and anesthesia for IVF and reproductive medicine, provided within the Vitro Fertilization and Reproductive Medicine Center. As an anesthesiologist, she works alongside the surgical or treating team, and the anesthetic plan for each patient is prepared in coordination with the planned procedure and the patient’s overall medical condition.

How Dr. Bilgen works with international patients

Dr. Bilgen speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the options. For anesthetic care, this generally includes a review of the patient’s medical history and any previous experiences with anesthesia in relation to the planned procedure.
