Prof. Dr. Sibel Kahraman Aközer

Prof. Dr. Sibel Kahraman Aközer is an anesthesiology specialist working in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit of Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. Her professional work covers anesthesiology and reanimation, and her areas of expertise include trauma anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. Dr. Aközer studied at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine from 1981 to 1987. She completed her specialty training in Anesthesiology and Reanimation at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and then worked at Dr. Sami Ulus Gynecology, Child Health and Diseases Training and Research Hospital from 1992 to 1993. She returned to the Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, where she served as Assistant Associate Professor from 1993 to 1997, received the title of Associate Professor in 1997, and continued in that role until 2000. Between 2003 and 2011 she worked and studied in the United States: as a Fellow in the University of Maryland, Department of Anesthesiology (2003–2007), in graduate-level study in pediatrics at New York Medical College (2007–2008), as a Fellow at the University of Maryland, The Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research Organized Research Center (STAR-ORC) (2008–2009), and in graduate-level study at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Department of Anesthesiology (2009–2011). She is a member of the Society for Neuroscience (SFN), the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), and the European Society of Anesthesiology (ESA).

Clinical focus

Dr. Aközer’s clinical work is centered on anesthesiology and reanimation. This involves the planning and delivery of anesthesia for patients undergoing surgical and other procedures, monitoring during the procedure, and care in the period that follows. Anesthesia planning is individualized: the type of anesthesia, the medications used, and the level of monitoring depend on the patient’s general health, existing medical conditions, current medications, and the nature of the planned procedure.

Within this field, her areas of expertise include trauma anesthesiology, which concerns anesthesia and supportive care for patients who have sustained injuries, and pediatric anesthesiology, which concerns anesthesia care for children. Children differ from adults in body size, physiology, and response to medications, so anesthesia for pediatric patients is planned and adjusted with these differences in mind. How Dr. Aközer works with international patients

Dr. Aközer speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
