Tufan Çiftçi, MD

Dr. Çiftçi’s field is medical pathology, the laboratory discipline that examines samples taken from the body in order to identify or exclude disease. A central part of his work is tissue sample evaluation. When a surgeon or other physician removes a piece of tissue, for example during a biopsy or an operation, the sample is prepared in the laboratory and examined by the pathologist, who describes what is seen and, where possible, arrives at a diagnosis. His findings are recorded in a written pathology report that is returned to the clinical team.

He also carries out cell sample evaluation, in which individual cells or small groups of cells, rather than intact tissue, are examined for changes that may indicate disease. Together, these activities form the pathological assessment that clinicians rely on when confirming a diagnosis, characterizing a condition or planning treatment. Because pathology reports often shape subsequent decisions, Dr. Çiftçi’s work is carried out in close cooperation with the physicians who treat the patient directly. The pathologist does not usually see the patient in person; instead, the findings are communicated to the relevant clinical team, which discusses them with the patient and decides on the next steps.

How Dr. Çiftçi works with international patients

Dr. Çiftçi communicates in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. For patients coming from abroad, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, including MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Where pathology is involved, existing slides or reports from previous examinations may be relevant, and the treating team will indicate what should be provided. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be useful for discussing findings or clarifying which documents are needed before travel. Pathology services are delivered as part of a coordinated care process, with results shared with the responsible clinicians to help guide diagnosis and treatment planning.
