Prof. Dr. Uğur Işık

Prof. Dr. Uğur Işık is a Pediatric Neurology specialist at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Neurology unit. He graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed his Pediatrics training at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. He then undertook a Pediatric Neurology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1999 to 2002, followed by a Pediatric Epilepsy fellowship at Washington University, St. Louis from 2002 to 2003.

From 2003 to 2005, Dr. Işık worked as a Pediatric Neurology Specialist at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2005, and in 2006 he completed a clinical observer period in Pediatric Epileptology at Children’s Hospital Boston. He has more than 41 years in medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Clinical Neurophysiology EEG – EMG Association, and the Pediatric Neurology Association. His published work includes case reports and clinical studies in journals such as Pediatric Neurology, Child’s Nervous System, Brain and Development and Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, addressing topics such as the prevalence of headache and its association with sleep disorders in children, surgical treatment of polymicrogyria, reversible EEG changes during rotavirus gastroenteritis, and prenatal MR imaging in the diagnosis of fetal stroke.

Clinical focus

Dr. Işık’s clinical work centers on neurological conditions of infancy and childhood. A major part of his practice concerns childhood epilepsy, including West syndrome and febrile seizures. His fellowship training in pediatric epilepsy and his observer experience in pediatric epileptology inform his assessment of children with seizure disorders, in which clinical history, examination findings and neurophysiological and imaging studies are reviewed together.

He also evaluates and follows children with cerebral palsy, spasticity, developmental delay, balance disorders, headaches and stroke. In addition, he provides neurological follow-up for high-risk newborns and premature babies, monitoring their neurological development over time. Where appropriate, care is planned in coordination with other specialties involved in the child’s treatment.

How Dr. Işık works with international patients

Dr. Işık consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging before the visit, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital stay. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options with the family.
