Zeynep Güral, MD

Zeynep Güral, MD is a radiation oncologist at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Radiation Oncology unit. She has more than 23 years in medicine. Her clinical work centers on radiotherapy for gastrointestinal cancers, head and neck cancers, brain tumors and breast cancer, and includes brachytherapy as part of her treatment repertoire.

Dr. Güral graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2003 and completed her specialty training in radiation oncology (Radyasyon Onkolojisi) at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2009. In the same year she spent time as a clinical observer at AMC in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. From 2010 to 2012 she worked as a specialist physician at Balıkesir State Hospital, and from 2012 to 2014 she was a lecturer at Bezmialem Vakıf University. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2014. She is a member of the Türk Radyasyon Onkolojisi Association, the Nöroonkoloji Association, the Akciğer Kanseri Association and the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO). She has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on topics including neoadjuvant chemoradiation for rectal cancer, adjuvant treatment in gastric cancer, bone health in breast cancer patients, radiotherapy in a phyllodes tumor recurrence, primary breast lymphoma and PET/CT response assessment in non-small-cell lung cancer.

Clinical focus

Dr. Güral plans and delivers cancer radiotherapy for a range of tumor sites. In gastrointestinal oncology, her published work reflects an interest in combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy for rectal cancer and in the role of radiotherapy after surgery for gastric cancer. She also treats patients with head and neck cancers and brain tumors, areas in which treatment planning is typically coordinated with the other specialties involved in a patient’s care.

Radiotherapy for breast cancer is a further part of her practice, and she offers brachytherapy, a form of radiation treatment in which the radiation source is placed close to or inside the tumor. Whether a particular technique is appropriate depends on the individual diagnosis, stage and prior treatment, and is decided after a full review of each case.

How Dr. Güral works with international patients

Dr. Güral consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the radiotherapy options relevant to the diagnosis.
