Deniz Bülent Kalay, MD

Deniz Bülent Kalay, MD is an Emergency Service physician at Acibadem Kartal Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 24 years in medicine, with a professional path that began in prehospital ambulance care and later included hospital-based emergency work, service in the armed forces and an administrative role as a deputy chief physician.

Dr. Kalay graduated from Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine in 2005. His professional experience includes Medline Emergency Health Ambulance (2002), Dünya Eye Hospital, Ataköy, İstanbul (2005–2006), İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Oncology Institute (2006–2007) and Medical Park Hospital, Bahçelievler (2007–2010). From 2010 to 2011 he served in the Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri, and from 2011 to 2013 he was Deputy Chief Physician at Italian Hospital. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2013. He is a member of the Turkish Medical Association, TEMA Vakfı and Education Volunteers, and holds a Beşiktaş Congress Membership.

Clinical focus

Dr. Kalay’s work centers on the assessment and management of acute conditions that present to the emergency department. His areas of expertise include burn treatment, trauma care and emergency interventions for patients with acute injuries. In these situations, the initial priorities are to establish the nature and severity of the injury, stabilize the patient and decide whether further specialist care or hospital admission is needed. The extent of a burn, the mechanism of a trauma and the patient’s overall condition guide these decisions.

A second area of his practice is toxicology, which covers the evaluation of patients who have been exposed to potentially harmful substances. He also manages insect bites and stings, including bee stings and tick bites. Reactions to bites and stings vary from mild local symptoms to more serious responses, and tick exposures may require attention to how the tick is removed and to symptoms that could develop afterward. Emergency assessment in these cases focuses on identifying the exposure, recognizing signs that need urgent treatment and advising on follow-up where appropriate.

How Dr. Kalay works with international patients

Dr. Kalay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and current symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Because emergency conditions are guided by their urgency, the timing and scope of care depend on the individual situation.
