Should I stop exfoliating forever after barrier damage?

No — just pause until your skin has been calm and comfortable for at least a week, usually two to four weeks total. Then reintroduce one active at a time at low frequency, such as one or two nights weekly, and increase only if skin stays comfortable. Skin that never stings tolerates actives better over the long run than skin pushed to its limit. Persistent intolerance to all actives is worth discussing with a dermatologist.
