Does sodium make you gain weight?

Sodium itself has no calories and doesn’t create body fat. What it does cause is water retention — a high-sodium day can add one to three pounds of fluid, visible on the scale and sometimes as puffiness, which resolves within days of normal eating. Indirectly, though, high-sodium foods tend to be calorie-dense processed items, and salty snacks can drive both overeating and sugary-drink consumption, so sodium-heavy eating patterns often travel with weight gain.
