Prof. A. Erdem Kılavuz, MD

Prof. A. Erdem Kılavuz, MD is an otorhinolaryngology specialist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit with a subspecialty focus on head and neck surgery. With more than 17 years in medicine, his practice covers diseases of the ear, nose and throat as well as cancers of the head and neck region.

Dr. Kılavuz graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 2009 and began his career the same year as a general practitioner at Bereketli Köyü Health Center in Diyarbakır. He completed his specialty training in Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases at İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2013. He then worked as an ENT specialist at Malazgirt State Hospital in Muş from 2013 to 2015 and at Özel Karatas Hospital in Izmir in 2015, before moving to İstanbul later that year. He held ENT specialist positions at Acıbadem Taksim Hospital (2015–2017) and Acıbadem Kozyatağı Hospital (2017–2018) and has been based at his current hospital since 2018. He is a member of the Turkish Medical Association and the Turkish Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Association.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Kılavuz’s work is the surgical management of head and neck cancers, including oral cancer and cancers of the tongue and tongue base. He also evaluates and treats dysphagia (swallowing difficulty), which may occur on its own or in connection with head and neck disease and its treatment. His published research includes studies on parotid gland surgery, fine-needle aspiration cytology of the parotid gland, survival after laryngectomy, and drug-induced sleep endoscopy.

In otology, his areas of expertise include vertigo and balance disorders, cochlear implants and pediatric hearing loss. He also performs tonsil surgery and rhinoplasty; his publications in this area address adenotonsillectomy in children, suture techniques in rhinoplasty, nasal dorsum augmentation and the endoscopic repair of nasal septal perforations. The suitability of any procedure is determined individually after clinical assessment.

How Dr. Kılavuz works with international patients

Dr. Kılavuz consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
