Prof. Aziz Polat, MD

Prof. Aziz Polat, MD is a pediatrician who works in the Pediatrics unit at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, with a subspecialty in Pediatric Hematology. He has more than 39 years in medicine, and his clinical work centers on blood disorders and cancers in children, including anemia, iron deficiency, thalassemia, leukemia, lymphoma, Wilms tumor and childhood brain tumors.

Dr. Polat graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1987 and worked as a general practitioner at the Kahramanmaraş-Elbistan SSK Dispensary in 1988. From 1988 to 1992 he was a research assistant at the Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine Department of Child Health and Diseases, completing his specialty training in Child Health and Diseases in 1992. He then served as a specialist physician at the Ministry of Health Çorum-Kargı State Hospital from 1992 to 1994 before joining the Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine Department of Child Health and Diseases as an Assistant Professor in 1994. Between 1996 and 1998 he completed subspecialty training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Ege University Faculty of Medicine. He returned to Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine, where he was Associate Professor from 1998 to 2004 and Professor from 2004 to 2016. From 2019 to 2021 he practiced at Özel Isparta Medikaya Hospital, and in 2022 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He is a member of the İstanbul Medical Chamber, the Turkish Hematology Association, Türk Pediatri Kurumu and the Turkish Pediatric Hematology Association. His published work includes studies on iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 and folate concentrations, beta thalassemia, and a premarital screening program for thalassemia.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Polat’s practice involves anemia in children, including iron deficiency and the evaluation of related laboratory findings. He also follows children with thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder that requires long-term monitoring and coordinated care. Several of his publications examine oxidative stress, antioxidant capacity and other laboratory markers in patients with iron deficiency and beta thalassemia.

In pediatric oncology, his areas of expertise include leukemia, lymphoma, Wilms tumor and childhood brain tumors. Evaluation of these conditions typically depends on a careful review of blood tests, imaging and any prior pathology findings, and the appropriate approach is determined individually for each child.
