Prof. Aziz Yazar, MD

Prof. Aziz Yazar, MD is a medical oncologist in the Medical Oncology Department at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul. He provides care for adults with a broad range of solid tumours, including cancers of the lung and chest, breast, digestive system, urinary and reproductive organs, brain, and head and neck. He has more than 40 years in medicine and has co-authored research articles, several of them on lung cancer.

Dr. Yazar studied medicine at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine from 1986 to 1993. He then trained in Internal Medicine at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, where he worked from 1993 to 1998 and completed his training in 1997. From 1999 to 2002 he was at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine. Between 2002 and 2005 he worked in Medical Oncology at İstanbul University Oncology Institute, where he became an Associate Professor in 2004 and completed his Medical Oncology training in 2005. He then practised at American Hospital from 2005 to 2007 and has worked with Acibadem Healthcare Services since 2007. His academic record also includes Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine (2010). He is a member of the Turkish Oncology Association, ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology), ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology) and the İstanbul Medical Chamber.

Clinical focus

Dr. Yazar’s clinical work covers the medical treatment of solid tumours in adults. His areas of expertise include lung and thoracic cancers, breast cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer and colorectal cancers. He also treats prostate cancer, bladder cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, brain tumours and head and neck cancers.

His published work reflects a particular interest in lung cancer. He has co-authored studies on the prognostic and predictive value of serum vascular endothelial growth factor and related markers in small cell and non-small cell lung cancer, a phase II study of gemcitabine and cisplatin as neo-adjuvant chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer, and an analysis of prognostic factors in metastatic renal cell carcinoma presented at the Thirty-Ninth Annual Meeting of American Society of Clinical Oncology.

How Dr. Yazar works with international patients

Dr. Yazar consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as CT, MRI or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the medical treatment options that may be appropriate. For patients who cannot travel at first, a video consultation with Dr. Yazar can be arranged to review the diagnosis and discuss possible next steps.
