Barış Gıakoup, MD

Barış Gıakoup, MD is an Emergency Medicine physician working in the Emergency Service at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in İstanbul. His work in environmental emergencies includes drowning and acute hypoxia, where rapid recognition and support of breathing and oxygenation are central to care. He also manages airway obstruction, a condition in which prompt intervention is required to secure the airway and maintain adequate ventilation.

Further areas of expertise include burn treatment and trauma care, covering the initial assessment, stabilization and management of patients with burns or injuries of varying severity. Dr. Gıakoup also treats bee stings and tick bites, which may range from local reactions to more serious systemic responses that need monitoring and treatment. Across these areas, he carries out emergency interventions as part of the acute care provided in the Emergency Service, and coordinates further evaluation or referral to other specialties when the clinical picture requires it.

How Dr. Gıakoup works with international patients

Dr. Gıakoup speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. For international patients, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and current symptoms, a review of any existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is also available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before traveling, although emergency conditions themselves require in-person assessment and treatment. Follow-up arrangements are discussed individually according to the nature of the condition and the patient’s circumstances.
