Prof. Cem Aygün, MD

Prof. Cem Aygün, MD is a gastroenterologist at Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Gastroenterology unit. His subspecialty is the treatment of pancreas, liver and biliary tract diseases, and his clinical work covers the diagnosis and management of digestive disorders as well as endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). He has more than 30 years in medicine and speaks Turkish and English.

Dr. Aygün graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1996. He completed his internal medicine training at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2001 and his gastroenterology training at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine in 2007. His academic career began as a research assistant in internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of İstanbul University (1996–2001), followed by a position as assistant professor in gastroenterology at the Faculty of Medicine of Kocaeli University (2003–2007). After working as a specialist at Adıyaman Devlet Hospital (2008–2009), he held academic positions at the Faculty of Medicine of Fırat University (2009–2012) and the Faculty of Medicine of İstanbul Medipol University (2012–2014). From 2015 to 2019 he was associate professor and then professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Acibadem MAA University. He is a member of the Turkish Liver Research Association, the European Society for Gastroenterology and the Turkish Gastroenterology Association. His published work includes studies on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and adiponectin, endothelial dysfunction in patients with ulcerative colitis, drug-induced cholestatic hepatitis and endoscopic submucosal dissection, in journals such as Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol, Inflamm Bowel Dis and World J Gastroenterol.

Clinical focus

Dr. Aygün evaluates and manages a broad range of liver diseases, including fatty liver disease and hepatitis, together with pancreatic diseases and biliary tract diseases. In the field of inflammatory bowel disease, he sees patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, conditions that usually require long-term follow-up and an individually adjusted treatment plan.

His endoscopic practice includes gastroscopy, which is used in the assessment of upper digestive complaints and of conditions such as Barrett’s oesophagus, and ERCP, an endoscopic procedure applied in the diagnosis and treatment of selected bile duct and pancreatic conditions. Whether a particular procedure is appropriate is decided on the basis of each patient’s history, imaging and clinical findings.

How Dr. Aygün works with international patients

Dr. Aygün consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages.
