Prof. Cengiz Canpolat, MD

Prof. Cengiz Canpolat, MD is a pediatrician whose clinical work is centered on pediatric oncology and pediatric hematology. He sees patients in the Pediatrics unit of Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul and has more than 48 years of experience in medicine. His practice covers childhood cancers, including brain tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, Wilms tumor and rare tumors, as well as blood disorders such as thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome.

Dr. Canpolat studied at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine from 1978 to 1984. From 1984 to 1986 he worked at Bartın SSK Hospital, where he was responsible for internal medicine, pediatrics and the emergency unit. He completed his specialty training in pediatrics at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and then undertook advanced specialization in pediatric hematology and oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 1993 to 1995. On his return he joined the Marmara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, where in 1995 he became Head of the Division of Pediatric Hematology – Oncology. He was appointed Associate Professor in 1996 and Professor in 2002, and he has worked with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2002. He is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the International Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (SIOP), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, the Turkish Pediatric Oncology Association, the Turkish Pediatric Hematology Association, the Turkish Hematology Association and the Turkish Blood Banks Association.

Clinical focus

In pediatric oncology, Dr. Canpolat evaluates and treats children with brain tumors, Wilms tumor, lymphoma, leukemia and rare tumors. His hematology practice includes thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia in children and myelodysplastic syndrome. Each case is assessed individually on the basis of the diagnosis, the findings of imaging and laboratory tests, and any treatment already given.

His published work reflects these interests. It includes studies on anterior mediastinal masses appearing after chemotherapy in children and the distinction between thymus hyperplasia and recurrence, a randomized dose-comparison trial of granisetron for the prevention of nausea and emesis in children receiving carboplatin-based chemotherapy, research on the effects of iron deficiency on neutrophil and monocyte apoptosis and on developmental test scores in children, and reports on causes of impaired renal function in bladder rhabdomyosarcoma and on hepatic veno-occlusive disease after bone marrow transplantation.

Dr. Canpolat consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
