Prof. Dr. Çetin Karaca

Prof. Dr. Çetin Karaca is a gastroenterologist at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul, where he practises in the Gastroenterology unit. He has worked in medicine for more than 33 years. He graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1993 and completed his training in Internal Medicine (1998) and Gastroenterology (2003) at the same faculty. He obtained the European Board of Gastroenterology Diploma in 2008. From 2008 to 2009 he trained in endoscopic ultrasonography at the Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital Gastroenterology Unit, and in 2022 he was an observer at the Johns Hopkins Clinic, Advanced Endoscopy Center.

Dr. Karaca held gastroenterology roles at Acıbadem Healthcare Services from 2002 to 2008 and again in 2012. Between 2006 and 2009 he served as Deputy Clinical Chief and Associate Professor at the İstanbul Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital Gastroenterology Clinic. He then joined the İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Department of Gastroenterology as Associate Professor (2009–2012) and Professor (2012–2016). From 2016 to 2024 he worked in gastroenterology at İstanbul Surp Pirgic Armenian Hospital. He is a member of The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the Turkish Gastroenterology Association, the Turkish Liver Research Association, the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Association and the Endoscopy Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karaca evaluates and treats a broad range of digestive system conditions. A central part of his practice is inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He also sees patients with celiac disease, iron deficiency anemia, gastroenteritis and other small intestine diseases, as well as reflux disease, gastritis and dyspepsia.

His areas of expertise further include bile duct diseases and diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract. His practice includes gastroscopy, colonoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and he has completed training in endoscopic ultrasonography. Assessment and treatment planning are based on the individual patient’s findings, symptoms and medical history, and the appropriate diagnostic steps are discussed with the patient before any procedure.

How Dr. Karaca works with international patients

Dr. Karaca consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before or instead of travelling to İstanbul, where clinically appropriate.
