Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Akalın’s practice involves pain management for musculoskeletal and spine-related complaints. He assesses and treats conditions of the spine, including reduced lumbar lordosis and reduced cervical lordosis, as well as facet joint syndrome. Other conditions he sees regularly include frozen shoulder syndrome, fibromyalgia and restless legs syndrome. In each case the aim is to clarify the source of the symptoms, review any previous treatment and set out a rehabilitation plan appropriate to the individual patient.

Dr. Akalın also works with patients who have movement disorders, including rehabilitation for Parkinson’s disease, and with muscle and nerve diseases that affect strength, mobility or function. In pediatric rehabilitation, his areas of expertise include the assessment and management of pediatric spasticity. Rehabilitation programs in these areas are generally planned over time and adjusted according to the patient’s progress and clinical findings.

How Dr. Akalın works with international patients

Dr. Akalın consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation with Dr. Akalın typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
