Ecem Sevim Akı, MD

Ecem Sevim Akı, MD is an otorhinolaryngology (ENT) specialist at Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit with a subspecialty interest in sleep disorders. With more than 19 years in medicine, she evaluates and treats ear, nose and throat conditions in both adults and children, covering medical management as well as surgical procedures of the nose, sinuses, throat and ear.

Dr. Akı studied medicine at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine from 2007 to 2013. After a period at Kırklareli Training and Research Hospital (2013–2014), she trained as an assistant doctor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at İstanbul Training and Research Hospital between 2014 and 2019, completing her specialty training at Health Sciences University İstanbul Training and Research Hospital Department of Otorhinolaryngology in 2018. She then served as a specialist doctor at Erciş Şehit Rıdvan Çevik State Hospital from 2019 to 2021, followed by a position at Health Sciences University Bozyaka Training and Research Hospital in 2021. In 2022 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. Dr. Akı has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on topics including intratympanic steroid therapy in sudden sensorineural hearing loss, the effect of septoplasty on obstructive sleep apnea treatment parameters, the Turkish adaptation of the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale, and predictive markers in recurrent cholesteatoma.

Clinical focus

Nasal and sinus care forms a substantial part of Dr. Akı’s practice. She performs endoscopic sinus surgery and other sinus surgery, as well as rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty, which address the shape of the nose together with the nasal septum when breathing is also affected. She also carries out prominent ear correction. In the throat, her work includes tonsil surgery, adenoid treatment, and the assessment of pharyngitis and swallowing difficulties.

Consistent with her subspecialty in sleep disorders, Dr. Akı evaluates snoring and its relationship to the upper airway. She also sees patients with dizziness and assesses hearing loss in children. In each case, the choice between observation, medical treatment and surgery depends on the individual findings and is discussed with the patient or family.

How Dr. Akı works with international patients

Dr. Akı consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling or to follow up after treatment.
