Prof. Dr. Neşe Tuncer

Prof. Dr. Neşe Tuncer is a neurologist at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Neurology unit. With more than 37 years in medicine, her clinical practice covers headache treatment; dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and aging; treatment of movement disorders; and stroke and preventive treatments. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2022.

Dr. Tuncer graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1989. She completed her compulsory service at Erzurum SSK Hospital in the Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Units (1989–1990) and then worked at Antalya SSK Hospital in the Internal Medicine and Emergency Service Units (1990–1991). From 1992 to 1994 she undertook medical specialty training at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Department of Biochemistry, and in 1999 she completed her Neurology training at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine. Between 1999 and 2002 she earned an M.Sc. in Neuroscience at İstanbul University Aziz Sancar Experimental Medicine Research Institute, and in 2007 she trained at the Karolinska Instituet Center for Alzheimer Research. Her professional career includes the Marmara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Neurology (1994–2010) and the Marmara University Pendik Training and Research Hospital Neurology Clinic (2010–2022). She chairs the Behavioral Neurology Dementia Study Group of the Turkish Neurology Association, is a founding member of the Kadıköy Branch of the Turkish Alzheimer Association, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Neuropsychiatry Association. Her memberships also include the Turkish Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the Movement Disorder Society, the Alzheimer”s Association, the Turkish Epilepsy Association, the Cerebrovascular Diseases Association, the Neurodegenerative Diseases Association and the Mediterranean Stroke Society. She has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on topics including Parkinson’s disease, headache, neuro-Behçet’s disease and cognitive function in systemic conditions.

Clinical focus

Dr. Tuncer evaluates and treats patients with cognitive and neurodegenerative conditions, including dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, and Parkinson’s disease and ageing. Her work in movement disorders includes essential tremor and other movement disorder treatment.

She also manages headache, including nerve blocks, and trigeminal neuralgia, as well as epilepsy, vertigo and balance disorders, and stroke and preventive treatment. Each patient is assessed individually, and the appropriate approach depends on the clinical findings and the results of any investigations.

How Dr. Tuncer works with international patients

Dr. Tuncer consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI or CT reports, laboratory results, previous neurological assessments and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical neurological examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling.
