Prof. Ferdane Pirinççi Sapmaz, MD

Prof. Ferdane Pirinççi Sapmaz, MD is a gastroenterologist at Acibadem Kent Hospital (Izmir), where she works in the Gastroenterology unit. Her clinical work covers inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, together with liver, pancreatic and biliary tract diseases, dysphagia, and reflux, gastritis and dyspepsia. Dr. Sapmaz graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in 2005. From 2006 to 2010 she was a research assistant at the Ankara Training and Research Hospital (Internal Medicine Clinic), completing her internal medicine training there in 2010, and she then worked as a specialist at Ankara Occupational Diseases Hospital from 2010 to 2011. Between 2011 and 2014 she trained in gastroenterology at Kırıkkale University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, completing this training in 2014. In 2017 she became an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Health Sciences University Ankara Keçiören Health Practice and Research Center, and in 2023 she was appointed Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Health Sciences University Gülhane Faculty of Medicine. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2025. She is a member of the GASTROINTESTINAL ENDOSCOPY SOCIETY, the TURKISH GASTROENTEROLOGY SOCIETY and the INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES SOCIETY. Her published research includes studies on Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens, non-invasive scores for liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B, endothelial dysfunction in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, colorectal cancer surveillance in inflammatory bowel diseases, and gastrointestinal symptoms in SARS-CoV-2 infection, published in journals such as The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Medicine and the European Journal of Internal Medicine.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Sapmaz’s practice is the assessment and management of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She also evaluates and treats liver diseases, pancreatic diseases and biliary tract diseases, as well as common upper digestive complaints such as reflux, gastritis and dyspepsia, and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).

Her endoscopic work includes colonoscopy and esophagoscopy for diagnosis and follow-up, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for selected biliary and pancreatic conditions. Whether an endoscopic procedure is appropriate, and which one, is decided after reviewing the individual patient’s history, symptoms and existing test results.

How Dr. Sapmaz works with international patients

Dr. Sapmaz consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging, endoscopy reports and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options.
