Hakan Kutlu, MD

Hakan Kutlu, MD is a specialist in Infectious Diseases & Clinical Microbiology at Acibadem Ankara Hospital in Ankara, where he sees patients in the Infectious Diseases Department. Dr. Kutlu is a member of the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Association, the Viral Hepatit Association, the Hospital Infections Association, the Disinfection, Antisepsis and Sterilization Association, ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases), the Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialists Association and the Turkish Medical Association. He has co-authored publications in the Turkish Journal of Hematology and Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Mecmuası, including work on secondary infections in febrile neutropenic patients with cancer, the antibacterial agent daptomycin, and pandemic influenza outpatient clinic data.

Clinical focus

Dr. Kutlu’s clinical work covers a range of infectious diseases in adults. A substantial part of his practice concerns sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis, HIV and AIDS, and HPV. He also assesses and manages patients with hepatitis and shingles, as well as lower respiratory tract infections. Diagnosis in these areas typically relies on a careful history of symptoms and possible exposures together with laboratory testing, after which the available treatment options are discussed with the patient.

In addition to treating established infections, Dr. Kutlu advises on travel health and adult vaccination. This may include reviewing a patient’s vaccination history, discussing vaccines that are relevant to a planned journey or to an individual’s age and health status, and providing general guidance on reducing the risk of infection while traveling.

How Dr. Kutlu works with international patients

Dr. Kutlu consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as laboratory and pathology results, X-ray or CT reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing test results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
