Prof. Haldun Akgöz, MD

Prof. Haldun Akgöz, MD is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department at Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 39 years in medicine. His clinical work covers conditions affecting the heart muscle, the coronary arteries, the heart rhythm and the heart valves, together with diagnostic and interventional procedures such as coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention.

Dr. Akgöz graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1987. He completed his cardiology training at Dr. Siyami Ersek Chest, Heart and Vascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital in 1996 and became an Associate Professor at the same institution in 2006. He worked in its cardiology department from 1992 to 2017, after which he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2017. He is a member of the Turkish Cardiology Association and the European Cardiology Association.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. Akgöz’s practice concerns heart failure and ischemic heart disease. He evaluates patients with suspected or established coronary artery disease and performs coronary angiography to assess the coronary arteries. Where the findings indicate it, he carries out percutaneous coronary intervention. He also follows patients with hypertension, a condition that is often managed alongside other cardiovascular problems, and he assesses inflammatory conditions of the heart muscle such as myocarditis.

Rhythm disorders form another area of his work, including atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias. In the field of heart valve disease, Dr. Akgöz evaluates patients with aortic valve stenosis, mitral valve regurgitation and rheumatic heart disease. In each case the assessment aims to clarify the diagnosis, the severity of the condition and the treatment options that may be appropriate for the individual patient.

How Dr. Akgöz works with international patients

Dr. Akgöz consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as echocardiography or other ultrasound reports, MRI, CT or X-ray reports, laboratory results, previous angiography reports, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options.
