Prof. Hülya Hamzaoğlu, MD

Prof. Hülya Hamzaoğlu, MD is a gastroenterology specialist at Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul, where she works within the Gastroenterology unit and also treats hemorrhoids and anorectal diseases. Dr. Hamzaoğlu graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1988 and completed internal medicine specialty training at Taksim Training and Research Hospital between 1989 and 1993. She then trained in gastroenterology at Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital, completing this training in 1996. In 1993 she spent time in the Gastroenterology Division of Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, and in 1997 she worked for one month at Giessen Universitat, Medizische Klinik, in Giessen, Germany. She became Professor at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Gastroenterology, in 2004, and in 2004–2005 spent six months at the Inflammatory Bowel Clinic of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2010. She is a member of the Turkish Gastroenterology Association and the Turkish Liver Research Association, and serves as President of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Association. Her published work includes studies on the safety of infliximab in Crohn’s disease, CARD15 variants in Crohn’s disease, thrombophilia in inflammatory bowel disease and the diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Hamzaoğlu’s practice is inflammatory bowel disease, including the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Management of these chronic conditions usually involves confirming the diagnosis, assessing disease activity and extent, and planning medical therapy and follow-up over time. She also evaluates patients with gastroenteritis, biliary tract diseases, and reflux, gastritis and dyspepsia.

Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy is part of her routine work, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy and esophagoscopy, which may be used to investigate symptoms, obtain tissue samples or monitor known disease. In addition, she treats hemorrhoids and other anorectal diseases.
