Hüseyin Akcan, MD

Hüseyin Akcan, MD is a radiologist at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Radiology unit with a subspecialty focus on Interventional Radiology. Clinical focus

Dr. Akcan’s areas of expertise include abdominal radiology, genitourinary radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, oncologic radiology, and head and neck imaging. In these areas he interprets imaging studies to help referring physicians characterise findings, assess the extent of disease and follow changes over time. The modalities he works with include MRI, CT imaging, X-ray imaging, Doppler ultrasound and ultrasound imaging, including abdominal and thoracic ultrasound. The choice of modality depends on the clinical question, the region being examined and the patient’s previous investigations, and in many cases findings from one study are correlated with earlier or complementary imaging.

Interventional radiology forms a further part of his practice. This field uses imaging guidance during procedures, and Dr. Akcan’s background in MRI, CT and ultrasound supports this work. Whether an interventional approach is appropriate for a given patient is decided individually, after the available imaging and clinical information have been reviewed and discussed with the treating team.

How Dr. Akcan works with international patients

Dr. Akcan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Because much of Dr. Akcan’s work involves reviewing images, having complete prior studies available, ideally as original image files rather than reports alone, helps make this review more informative.
