Prof. İlgin Özden, MD

Prof. İlgin Özden, MD is a General Surgery specialist who practices at Acibadem Taksim Hospital and Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul. His clinical work concentrates on diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract, including cancers of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, as well as oncological surgery and robotic surgery. With more than 35 years in medicine, Dr. Özden has spent much of his career in hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation.

Dr. Özden graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1991 and completed his General Surgery training at the İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Department of General Surgery in 1996, where he also served as chief resident in hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery. He undertook further training abroad at Nagoya University (2000–2001), Kyoto University (2001 and 2005) and Wisconsin University (2004). Between 2007 and 2020 he was responsible for the Liver Transplantation Program at İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, where he also held the positions of Vice Dean (2009–2011) and Deputy Chief Physician (2013–2017). In 2020 he joined the Liver Transplantation & Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery Unit at the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health Başakşehir Çam&Sakura City Hospital, and in 2025 he returned to İstanbul Faculty of Medicine. He is a member of the Turkish Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Association and of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health Liver Transplantation Scientific Advisory Board.

Clinical focus

Dr. Özden evaluates and treats patients with a range of hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions. His areas of expertise include liver diseases such as fatty liver disease and liver failure, liver cancer, and pancreatic diseases. He also manages biliary tract diseases, including cholecystitis, gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer.

His surgical practice covers oncological surgery for tumors of the liver, pancreas and biliary system, and he uses robotic surgery where it is considered appropriate for the individual patient. Each case is assessed on the basis of the patient’s diagnosis, imaging findings, general health and previous treatments before any surgical option is discussed. Not every condition is suited to a surgical or robotic approach, and the recommended plan may differ from patient to patient.

How Dr. Özden works with international patients

Dr. Özden consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges the appointments and hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to have an initial discussion or review of their case before traveling.
