İrem Mürtekin is an audiologist at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul, where she works within the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit. Her clinical work centers on the assessment of hearing, including audiometry and the evaluation of hearing loss in both adults and children. Because hearing loss can have a range of causes and can develop gradually, careful and repeatable testing is a central part of the evaluation.

Pediatric hearing loss is a distinct part of her work. Assessing hearing in children requires methods adapted to the child’s age and ability to cooperate, and the results are considered together with the child’s development and medical history. Her role is to carry out and interpret the hearing assessment; decisions about medical or surgical treatment rest with the treating ENT physicians, who may consider options such as a cochlear implant in selected cases of hearing loss. The audiological findings she provides are one of the elements that inform such discussions.

How İrem Mürtekin works with international patients

İrem Mürtekin communicates in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example previous hearing test results, MRI or CT reports, laboratory results and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing test results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, with hearing assessment carried out as needed. For international patients who are not yet able to travel, a video consultation is available, which can be used to review existing reports and discuss hearing-related concerns before any in-person assessment. For children, parents or guardians are involved throughout the evaluation, and the findings are explained in a way that supports informed decisions about the next steps in care.
