Mehmet Erem, MD

Mehmet Erem, MD is an otorhinolaryngology specialist in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit at Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 32 years in medicine and sees patients with ear, nose, throat, and balance-related complaints, including conditions that may be managed medically and those for which surgery may be considered.

Dr. Erem graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and completed his specialty training in Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases at the same faculty in 1999. Earlier, in 1994, he undertook training in general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology at CHRU de Nancy and Université Catholique de Lille in France. He is a graduate of Galatasaray High School. Between 2001 and 2002 he was an observer physician at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Institute, and in 2002 he took part in the University of Chicago Clinical Fellowship Program in Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery. He was a lecturer at Kadir Has University from 2004 to 2006 and at Bilim University from 2006 to 2008. From 2003 to 2016 he worked as a specialist physician at ME-Dİ Ear, Nose and Throat Center, and he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2010. He is a member of the İstanbul Medical Chamber, the Turkish Medical Association, the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, and SFORL (Société Française d’Oto-Rhino-Laryngologie et de Chirurgie de la Face et du Cou).

Clinical focus

Dr. Erem’s areas of expertise include tonsil surgery, adenoid conditions, and sinus surgery. Whether an operation is appropriate depends on the individual patient’s symptoms, examination findings, and the results of any previous treatment, and these points are discussed with the patient during consultation.

A second part of his practice concerns the ear and the balance system: hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, and vertigo. Because these symptoms can arise from a range of causes, assessment generally begins with a detailed history and clinical examination, and further evaluation is considered on a case-by-case basis.

How Dr. Erem works with international patients

Dr. Erem consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes, and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may allow an initial review of a case before any decision about traveling to İstanbul is made.
