Prof. Metin Gürsürer, MD

Prof. Metin Gürsürer, MD is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul, with more than 44 years in medicine. He graduated from Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine in 1982 and began his career at Burdur-Kocaaliler Health Center (1982–1985), followed by the Emergency Department of Bursa State Hospital (1985–1990). From 1990 to 1993 he worked as a research assistant at the Faculty of Medicine Köln University, and from 1993 to 1995 as a research assistant at Siyami Ersek Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery Center. He completed his cardiology training at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital in 1995 and continued at Siyami Ersek Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery Center until 2001.

Between 2001 and 2003 he served as Assistant Associate Professor at Zonguldak Karaelmas University Faculty of Medicine, where he became Associate Professor in 2003. At the same faculty he held the positions of Vice Dean, Intensive Care Units Coordinator, Deputy Chief Physician, Faculty Board Member, Chair of the Radiation Protection Committee and Ethics Committee Member. From 2006 to 2010 he practised at Özel Universal Hospital Kadıköy – Çamlıca Alman Hospital, and in 2010 he was appointed Professor at Yeni Yüzyıl University Faculty of Medicine. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2014. Dr. Gürsürer is a member of the Turkish Medical Association and the Turkish Cardiology Association, where he has served in the Valvular Diseases Working Group, as Secretary of the Valve Diseases Working Group, as Secretary, Vice Chair and Chair of the Nuclear Cardiology Working Group, as Chair of the Heart Failure Working Group, and as a member of the Abstract Evaluation Board at National Cardiology Congresses.

Clinical focus

Dr. Gürsürer’s areas of expertise include atrial septal defect (ASD), transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), pacemaker procedures and angiography. These interventional and diagnostic cardiology procedures are considered on an individual basis, taking into account the patient’s history, examination findings and existing imaging. Whether a particular procedure is appropriate depends on the clinical picture and is discussed with the patient after this assessment. How Dr. Gürsürer works with international patients

Dr. Gürsürer consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling.
