Prof. Murat Kemal Atahan, MD

Prof. Murat Kemal Atahan, MD is a General Surgery specialist at Acibadem Kent Hospital (Izmir) in İzmir. His clinical work centers on surgical oncology and breast diseases, including breast cancer, male breast cancer, mastectomy and breast reconstruction. He has more than 29 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2025.

Dr. Atahan graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1997 and completed his General Surgery training at İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2003. In 2012 he obtained the Medical Specialty Board qualification in Surgical Oncology and became an Associate Professor. Between 2013 and 2014 he trained at the European Institute of Oncology Milano, where he completed an Intraoperative Radiotherapy Fellowship and an Intraoperative Robotic Surgery Fellowship. He was appointed Professor at İzmir Katip Çelebi University Faculty of Medicine in 2020. His professional memberships include the Turkish Surgical Association, the Aegean Region Surgical Association, the European Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ESPEN), The International Association of Surgeons and the İzmir Medical Chamber. He holds the board chairmanship of the Turkish Federation of Breast Diseases and serves as a board member and Federation delegate of the İzmir Breast Diseases Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Atahan’s practice is focused on surgical oncology, with particular attention to diseases of the breast. He evaluates and treats patients with breast cancer, including the less common male breast cancer, and performs mastectomy when this is the appropriate surgical option. Where suitable, he also addresses breast reconstruction as part of the overall surgical plan.

Beyond oncology, he sees patients with benign breast conditions such as breast cysts, mastitis and breast pain, and he supports breast screening and the assessment of breast diseases more broadly. His areas of expertise also include breast augmentation surgery. Treatment recommendations depend on the individual diagnosis, imaging and pathology findings, and are discussed with each patient before any decision is made.

How Dr. Atahan works with international patients

Dr. Atahan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
