Prof. Mustafa Karahan, MD

Prof. Mustafa Karahan, MD is a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in Istanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. Dr. Karahan graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1985. He completed his specialty training there in 1993 and continued in the department as a specialist doctor and, from 1995, as an assistant associate professor. He was appointed Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2004. Since 2007 he has worked within Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He is a member of the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association, the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Education Council, the Turkish Sports Injuries, Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Association, the Sports Sciences Association, the Turkish Medical Association, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine. His published work includes studies on the effect of partial medial meniscectomy on the proprioceptive function of the knee, adhesion reduction after knee and tendon surgery in experimental models, the modified Fulkerson osteotomy in recurrent patellofemoral dislocation, and the management of Achilles tendon ruptures and distal biceps tendon tears.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karahan’s practice centers on sports-related injuries and degenerative joint disease. He assesses and treats knee and joint injuries, including meniscus tears and cruciate ligament tears, and provides surgical care for the shoulder and elbow. For patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, his work includes joint replacement surgery, including hip replacement and knee replacement. He also performs foot surgery and ankle surgery.

Whether a joint problem requires surgery depends on the individual findings, and the appropriate approach is determined after a clinical examination and a review of imaging. Treatment recommendations, including whether a conservative or a surgical option is suitable, are discussed with the patient on the basis of these findings.
