Prof. Dr. Namık Demir

Prof. Dr. Namık Demir is a specialist in Gynecology & Obstetrics at Acibadem Kent Hospital (Izmir) in İzmir, Turkey, with a subspecialty focus on perinatology and high-risk pregnancies. He has more than 47 years in medicine. Dr. Demir graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1979 and completed his specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in 1984. In 2010 he received Medical Specialty Board certification in Perinatology.

His early career included the Kasımpaşa Deniz Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic (1984–1986) and compulsory service at SSYB Van Maternity Hospital and SSYB Ayvalık State Hospitals (1986–1988). From 1988 to 2011 he worked at the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, first as Assistant Professor (1988–1991), then Associate Professor (1991–1997) and Professor (1997–2011). Between 2011 and 2023 he practiced at the İzmir Private Kent Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in 2023 he joined the İzmir Private Acıbadem Kent Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a member of the Ege Perinatology Association, the Maternal Fetal Medicine and Perinatology Association, the Turkish Gynecology Association, the İzmir Medical Chamber and the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics And Gynecology (ISUOG). His published work includes case reports and studies on prenatal diagnosis, first-trimester ultrasound markers, first-trimester miscarriage, preterm premature rupture of membranes and pregnancy after cardiac surgery.

Clinical focus

Dr. Demir’s clinical work centers on pregnancy follow-up and delivery care, including the monitoring of high-risk pregnancies. His areas of expertise include amniocentesis, maternal-fetal treatment and surgery, preeclampsia and ectopic pregnancy. In perinatology, the aim of follow-up is to identify conditions that may affect the mother or the fetus and to plan care accordingly; the approach in each case depends on the stage of pregnancy, the findings on examination and imaging, and the individual clinical situation.

In general gynecology, he sees patients with Bartholin cyst, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), human papillomavirus (HPV) and menstrual irregularities, and he performs hysterectomy when it is clinically indicated. Whether surgery, medical treatment or observation is appropriate is decided after a clinical assessment and a discussion of the available options with the patient.
