Assoc. Prof. Oğuz Kaan Ünal, MD

Assoc. Prof. Oğuz Kaan Ünal, MD is an endocrinology specialist at Acibadem Bursa Hospital in Bursa, where he works within the Endocrinology & Metabolism unit with a subspecialty focus on Thyroid Diseases and Treatment. His clinical interests span diabetes, thyroid disorders, obesity, osteoporosis and metabolic conditions. Dr. Ünal graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2000. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine in 2006, having worked as a research assistant in the Department of Internal Medicine from 2001 to 2006. He then trained in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the same faculty, serving as a subspecialty research assistant in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases from 2008 to 2011 and completing his subspecialty training in 2011. From 2011 to 2013 he worked at Aksaray Devlet Hospital as part of his compulsory service, and he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2018. His published work includes studies on levothyroxine treatment and QT dispersion in subclinical hypothyroidism, sitagliptin monotherapy and serum ghrelin levels in type 2 diabetes, the rapid preparation of hyperthyroid patients for thyroidectomy, and preoperative parathyroid hormone levels in relation to parathyroid adenoma volume and bone mineral density.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Ünal’s practice concerns diabetes and related metabolic conditions. He assesses and manages patients with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as prediabetes and insulin resistance. He also follows women with gestational diabetes. Treatment planning in these areas is individualized and typically takes into account the patient’s history, laboratory results and previous therapies.

Thyroid disease is a further area of focus. Dr. Ünal evaluates and treats patients with Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, goiter and thyroid nodules, and his clinical interests also include thyroid cancer. In addition, he sees patients with obesity and osteoporosis, where medical assessment and follow-up form part of endocrine care.

How Dr. Ünal works with international patients

Dr. Ünal consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
