Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Taşer

Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Taşer is an orthopedic surgery and traumatology specialist at Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialty areas are hip and knee replacement surgery and robotic surgery, and his clinical work concentrates on the knee and hip, including sports-related joint injuries. He has more than 46 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Taşer graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1980 and completed his training in orthopedics and traumatology there in 1984. In 1983 he gained clinical experience in Germany at the St. Ansgar Hospital Accident Surgery Clinic, the St.Vincenz Hospital Orthopedics Clinic and the Hamburg Eppendorf University Department of Orthopedics and Pathology Institute. He was appointed Associate Professor in 1988 and Professor in 1996 at the İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, and has worked within Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2002. Alongside his hospital practice, he served as President of the Medical Committee of Fenerbahçe Club and as a member of the Turkish Football Federation Medical Committee from 2004 to 2008; in 2008 he became Orthopedic Consultant Surgeon to Fenerbahçe Club and President of the Turkish Football Federation Medical Committee. He was President of the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association (2005–2007) and of the Turkish Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Society (2006–2008). His memberships include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the European Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy Association, the German Orthopedics and Traumatology Association, the European Foot and Ankle Society, the Asia Pacific Orthopedics Association and the Gerhard Küntscher Kreis.

Clinical focus

Dr. Taşer evaluates and treats meniscus tears, knee injuries and other joint injuries, with a particular emphasis on sports medicine and sports traumatology. His surgical practice includes knee replacement surgery and hip replacement surgery, and he performs robotic surgery in this setting. Whether a joint-preserving procedure, a replacement or a robotic-assisted approach is appropriate depends on the individual patient’s findings, and this is assessed case by case.

His published work reflects these interests. It includes studies on the arthroscopic treatment of discoid lateral meniscus, on meniscal and chondral lesions accompanying anterior cruciate ligament tears, and on graft fixation biomechanics in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, published in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy and Acta Orthopaedica et Traumatologica Turcica. He has also published on orthopedic surgery in patients with hemophilia, including arthroscopic synovectomy and radiosynoviorthesis, in the journal Haemophilia, and on retrograde osteochondral grafting for osteochondral lesions of the talus.

How Dr. Taşer works with international patients

Dr. Taşer consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages.
