Prof. Şahin Şenay, MD

Prof. Şahin Şenay, MD is a cardiovascular surgeon who practices at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, within the Cardiovascular Surgery unit. His work spans cardiac and vascular surgery, with subspecialty interests in vascular surgery, robotic surgery and varicose vein treatment. Dr. Şenay attended İzmir Fen High School from 1991 to 1994 and studied medicine at Ege University Faculty of Medicine from 1994 to 2000. He trained as a resident physician in cardiovascular surgery at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital from 2000 to 2005, completing his specialty training there in 2005, and continued to work at the same hospital until 2007. Between 2008 and 2009 he held a visiting fellowship at Leipzig Heart Center. He has been with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2012. He is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Cardiovascular Surgery Association, the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, the European Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and The Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.

Clinical focus

Dr. Şenay evaluates and treats a range of cardiac and vascular conditions. On the cardiac side, his areas of expertise include heart valve diseases, aortic valve stenosis and cardiomyopathies. His vascular work covers aortic aneurysm, other major vessel diseases and Buerger disease, as well as varicose vein treatment. Robotic surgery forms part of his surgical practice; whether a robotic or another approach is appropriate depends on the individual patient’s anatomy, condition and overall health, and this is assessed case by case.

His published work reflects these interests. He has co-authored reports on the endovascular treatment of occlusive abdominal aortic thrombosis and of an expanding thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm after surgical repair of acute type A dissection, published in Heart and Vessels and The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Other studies, published in journals including Heart Surgery Forum, Perfusion and Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, examine preoperative tranexamic acid in coronary bypass surgery, anemia tolerance and red cell transfusion in coronary artery surgery patients, the inflammatory response during cardiopulmonary bypass, arterial pressure waveform analysis for measuring cardiac output, and readmission to intensive care after fast-track cardiac surgery.

How Dr. Şenay works with international patients

Dr. Şenay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and current symptoms, a review of existing imaging and any previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options, including whether surgery is indicated at all. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation with Dr. Şenay before deciding whether to travel; any treatment decision still depends on an in-person assessment and up-to-date investigations.
